Armed Security Guard Services in Manhattan, NY

Armed security officers for Manhattan — supplied only on a documented request, after a risk assessment of the specific premises, by officers holding a valid NYS pistol licence, the 47-hour firearms course with annual requalification and a psychological evaluation. Unarmed by default; the page describes the five documented stages by which a Midtown showroom, a bank branch, a residence or a private sale becomes an armed post.

Dahlcore posts unarmed officers by default. An armed post in Manhattan exists only because a client asked for one in writing, a risk assessment of the specific premises supported it, and the decision was documented before the first shift — and that sequence is the whole of what this page describes. When it is the right answer, it is the right answer for a reason that can be stated: a jewelry showroom in Midtown that holds inventory an unarmed presence cannot credibly protect, a bank branch or trading floor whose own policy requires it, a principal on the Upper East Side whose profile has been assessed, a private sale of art whose insurer has set the terms. Dahlcore Security Guard Services supplies armed officers for those posts from its office at 250 Park Avenue: each holds a valid New York State pistol licence, has completed the 47-hour firearms course and requalifies annually, and has passed a psychological evaluation before being assigned. We are a licensed New York security guard agency; the company is veteran-owned, was founded in 2018, and is led by Ian Dahlberg, who brings more than 23 years of security experience. Where the assessment says unarmed is enough, that is what we recommend, in writing, even when the request said otherwise.

From Request to Armed Post: Five Documented Stages

No Manhattan post of ours is armed because someone said so on the phone. It is armed because these five things happened, in this order, and each left a record.

01

The request, in writing

The client — the owner, the managing agent, the head of security, the principal’s office — asks for armed coverage in writing and says why: the inventory, the policy, the profile, the insurer’s condition. A request without a reason is not refused; it is answered with a conversation about what the reason is, because the reason is what the assessment will test.

02

The risk assessment of the premises

A Dahlcore supervisor walks the specific Manhattan premises — the showroom, the branch, the residence, the venue — and assesses the post itself: what is being protected, who comes through the door, what has happened there before, what the client’s own policy and insurer require, what the surrounding block is like at the hours in question, and what an unarmed presence would and would not credibly cover. This is an assessment of the post, not a survey of your systems or an investigation of anyone.

03

The decision, documented

The assessment produces a written recommendation: armed, unarmed, or a blend — an armed officer at one post and unarmed officers at others — with the reasoning stated. The client signs off. Where the recommendation is unarmed and the request was armed, the client sees why before deciding; where it is armed, the document is what an insurer, a landlord or a licensing inquiry will later ask to see, and it exists from day one.

04

The officer, matched to the post

An armed officer is assigned who holds a valid New York State pistol licence, has completed the 47-hour firearms course and is current on annual requalification, has passed a psychological evaluation and a background check, and is trained in de-escalation first and in Dahlcore’s use-of-force policy — reviewed in every post-order briefing. For executive and residential posts, agents with former NYPD, State Trooper or federal backgrounds are available, and female agents where the principal or the setting calls for one.

05

The review, on a schedule

An armed post is reviewed at set intervals and whenever the reason for it changes — inventory moves, a principal’s profile changes, an insurer’s condition lapses, an incident occurs. The review can end an armed post as readily as the assessment began it. A named account manager owns that schedule, and the reporting portal holds every incident and shift record the review draws on.

What the assessment always says no to. Armed officers do not carry cash or valuables off the premises — we escort on site and coordinate with the client’s armoured-car vendor, nothing more. They do not drive the principal, and we supply no armoured vehicles, motorcades or executive fleet; we coordinate with the client’s transport. They do not conduct vehicle or IED sweeps or counter-surveillance, and they do not investigate anyone — loss prevention is observation and deterrence only. Unarmed by default remains the rule on every other post. Consultations are free, and nothing on this page is priced.

Why we would rather talk you out of it

An armed officer changes a room. In a Midtown lobby that sees three thousand people a day, most of them tenants and couriers, a visible firearm raises the temperature of every ordinary interaction and protects against a threat that the assessment may find is better met by a trained unarmed officer, good access control and a plan. In a jewelry showroom on the same block, with the inventory in the cases and a history of the trade to draw on, the same assessment may find the opposite. The point is that it is the premises that decide, not the request and not us. Dahlcore has an interest in getting this right that goes beyond the client’s: an armed post that should have been unarmed is a liability for everyone in the building, and one that should have been armed is worse. So the assessment is honest, the recommendation is written, and we are as willing to recommend unarmed as to supply armed — which, in Manhattan, is most of the time.

The Manhattan Posts Where the Assessment Most Often Says Yes

Four kinds of Manhattan premises account for most of the armed posts we hold. In each, the reason is specific and can be written down.

Jewelry, watch and luxury-goods showrooms

The trade of Midtown and the boutiques of SoHo and the Upper East Side, where the inventory in the cases is the reason and the insurer usually says so in the policy. The armed officer is at the door or the floor as the policy requires, works the trade’s own protocols — buzz-in entry, appointment lists, the vault schedule — and is often the one officer on a post otherwise staffed unarmed.

Bank branches and financial offices

Retail branches and the lobbies and trading floors of the Financial District and Midtown, where the client’s own security policy — written to the Bank Protection Act and its regulators’ expectations — sets the requirement before we are asked. We staff to that policy and document to it; fraud and suspicious activity are observed and reported, never investigated. None of this is legal advice; your compliance office owns the policy.

Executive, family and residential protection

A principal in a Tribeca townhouse or an Upper East Side building whose profile has been assessed, or a family office that has asked for a protective detail at the residence and the workplace. Agents with former NYPD, State Trooper or federal backgrounds, female agents where the setting calls for one, plainclothes where the post calls for it — and the client’s own driver and vehicles, which we coordinate with and do not replace.

High-value events and private sales

An auction preview, a private art sale, a product launch with the pieces on display, a gala where the guest list and the jewelry both warrant it — one-night posts where the insurer’s terms and the value in the room are the reason, and where the armed officer is one part of an event detail that is otherwise unarmed. Assessed for the venue and the night, not carried over from the last one.

Dispensaries are the one Manhattan retail category where the answer is fixed in advance: dispensary officers are unarmed, because that is how the state’s cannabis regulator has set the terms, and no request changes it.

What an Armed Officer in Manhattan Carries With Them

Four things a client, a landlord or an insurer can ask to see for any armed officer we post — and the answer for each.

The licence and the course

A valid New York State pistol licence under Penal Law §400, the 47-hour firearms training course completed, and annual requalification current — alongside the security guard registration every officer holds under General Business Law Article 7-A with the NY Department of State, Division of Licensing Services, and DCJS-approved training. The agency licence can be checked publicly at dos.ny.gov; licence numbers stay off this page and are provided on request.

The evaluation and the check

A psychological evaluation before assignment to an armed post, and a thorough background check before assignment to any post. These are Dahlcore’s conditions for carrying on our behalf, not merely the state’s minimums, and an officer who does not pass them is not posted armed regardless of what the client requested.

De-escalation first, and a written use-of-force policy

Every armed officer is trained to resolve a situation without force where it can be resolved that way, and works to Dahlcore’s written use-of-force policy, which is reviewed at every post-order briefing and follows New York’s Penal Law standard. The firearm is the last resort on the post, and the post orders say so. Officers are also certified in CPR, AED and First Aid, trained to administer naloxone, and trained in the A.L.I.V.E. active-shooter programme.

Insurance and the record

Dahlcore is licensed, insured and bonded — general liability and workers’ compensation — with a certificate of insurance on request naming the client, the landlord or the venue as their agreement requires. Every shift and incident on an armed post is recorded in the reporting portal, attendance is confirmed with GPS and geofenced verification, and a named account manager owns the post’s review schedule. The Manhattan office is at 250 Park Avenue.

One armed post inside an unarmed detail

Most of our Manhattan armed coverage is not an armed team. It is one armed officer at the one post the assessment identified — the showroom floor, the branch entrance, the principal’s side — inside a detail that is otherwise unarmed: the lobby desk, the loading dock, the event’s door and floor staff. That blend is deliberate. It puts the firearm where the reason is and nowhere else, keeps every other interaction in the building at the temperature an unarmed officer sets, and gives the client one provider, one account manager and one set of post orders for all of it. The armed officer works the client’s existing access-control and camera systems from their post like any other officer; we operate what the building has and install nothing. Where a client needs the whole detail armed, the assessment says so, and it is rare.

Manhattan Armed Security Guard FAQ

Answers about how an armed post is decided and run in Manhattan. For what armed security includes, licensing and training in New York, how officers respond to threats, armed versus unarmed versus blended coverage and how quickly officers can be posted, see our main Armed Security Guard page.

We asked for armed officers and your assessment came back recommending unarmed. Why?

Because the premises did not support the reason. An assessment tests the request against what is actually being protected, who comes through the door, what has happened there and what the client’s policy and insurer require; where a trained unarmed officer, good access control and a plan cover it, that is what we recommend, in writing, with the reasoning. You can still ask for armed, and if the assessment can support it we will supply it. What we will not do is post a firearm in a Midtown lobby because a request said so.

Who has to sign the documented request?

Someone with authority over the premises and the policy — the owner, the managing agent, the head of security, the principal or the principal’s office. Not a tenant asking for their own floor, and not an event planner on a venue’s behalf without the venue. The signed request and the signed decision sit together in the file, because the day an insurer or a licensing inquiry asks who decided the post should be armed, the answer needs to be a name and a date.

Can a post switch from unarmed to armed, or back, during a contract?

Yes, and it should when the reason changes. A showroom that takes in a consignment for a season, a branch that changes its policy, a principal whose situation changes — each triggers a new assessment, a new written decision and, where needed, a different officer. Going back to unarmed is the same process in reverse, and the review schedule exists so that an armed post does not simply persist after its reason has gone.

Do your armed officers carry visibly or concealed?

That follows the officer’s licence and the post, not a preference. A uniformed officer at a showroom door or a branch entrance carries openly in a duty holster, because the visible post is the point; a plainclothes agent with a principal carries discreetly, because the discreet post is the point. Which kind of post it is comes out of the assessment, and the post orders say so.

Can the armed officer carry our deposits to the bank at closing?

No. Dahlcore does not do cash in transit. The officer escorts the deposit within the premises — from the safe to the door, to the armoured-car vendor’s crew at the kerb — and coordinates with that vendor’s schedule, and that is where our part ends. A showroom or a branch that needs cash moved off site uses an armoured-car service; we are glad to work alongside it.

Can the same agent drive our principal between the residence and the office?

No. We supply no armoured vehicles, motorcades or executive fleet and our agents do not act as drivers; we coordinate with the principal’s own driver and transport. The agent travels with the principal where the assessment calls for it and is briefed on the route, the arrival and the departure, but the vehicle and the wheel are the client’s. We also do not conduct vehicle or IED sweeps or counter-surveillance.

Our jewelry insurer requires armed coverage. What do they get from you?

What they ask for, in the form they ask for it: the certificate of insurance naming them or the landlord as required, confirmation that the officer on post holds a valid New York State pistol licence and current requalification, the written assessment and decision, the post orders, and — through the reporting portal — the shift and incident record for the period they are looking at. Licence numbers are provided to the insurer on request; they are not published here.

Does the armed officer also work the desk, check IDs and handle deliveries?

On a blended post, yes — the armed officer at a showroom door is also the one greeting clients, checking appointments and working the buzz-in, and is chosen for being good at that. What we avoid is stretching one armed officer across duties that take them away from the post the assessment put them on. Where the desk and the door are two posts, they are two officers, and usually only one of them is armed.

Where in Manhattan the armed posts are

The jewelry and luxury trade of Midtown; the retail branches, lobbies and trading floors of the Financial District and Midtown; the boutiques of SoHo and the Upper East Side; the residences and family offices of the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side and Tribeca; and the galleries, auction previews and venues across the borough where a one-night post is assessed for the night. Wherever the post is, the same file exists behind it — the request, the assessment, the decision, the officer’s credentials and the review — and the account manager who holds it works from 250 Park Avenue.
