The Security Guard Act of 1992
Security guard training in New York is mandated by the Security Guard Act of 1992. The Act requires every security guard to complete three training courses, conducted at approved training schools by certified instructors. Dahlcore’s DCJS-approved Security School delivers all three — with courses available online for convenience. Register below to get started.
The Three Required Courses
New York requires every security guard to complete these three DCJS-approved courses — 8, 16, and 8 hours.
Pre-Assignment Training
A general introductory course. On successful completion, the guard receives a training certificate that must accompany their security guard registration application to the NY Department of State. Once the application is submitted, the guard has 90 days to complete the second course.
On-the-Job Training (OJT)
Relevant to the guard’s duties, the requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer. Conducted in an approved classroom setting or at an approved work site that is conducive to learning.
Annual In-Service
Completed each calendar year following the 16-Hour OJT. Designed to meet current training needs and refresh or update guards on changes in the security field. Required to renew a guard registration.
